Portage Series: Joy of the Morning
by Marilyn L. Lindemann
The Portage Series is inspired by the late 1700's & early 1800's when adventurers went into the wilderness to trap & trade furs. The popularity of the beaver hat had caused trappers to drive the Eurooean beaver to extinction. All eyes turned to a young, expanding nation where explorers seized the opportunity to venture west & north, discovering a vast wealth of natural resources. The Hudson Bay Company & the Northwest Company received furs from the French, English, & the Voyageurs, & eventually the mountain men as exploration opened up the West.
At the Rendezvous old friendships & rivalries were renewed, accoutrements & furs were traded, bought & sold. A mother & child arise early to wander in the Joy of the Morning.
