The Portage Series is inspired by the late 1700's & early 1800's when adventurers went into the wilderness to trap & trade furs. The popularity of the beaver hat had caused trappers to drive the European beaver to extinction. All eyes turned to a young, expanding nation where explorers seized the opportunity to venture west & north, discovering a vast wealth of natural resources. The Hudson Bay Company & the Northwest Company received furs from the French, English, & the Voyageurs, & eventually the mountain men as exploration opened up the West. Lifestyles were carved from a wilderness; the comfort of a fire, a hot meal, & a colorful sky could transport dreamers to a childhood home & cozy quilt covered bed at mystical Patchwork Bay.
