Winter with extremes of snow, wind, & temperature changes, have not deterred the intrepid Musk Ox from flourishing in this vast & pristine environment. Cloaked in quivet, the warmest of all wools, they are insulated from earth's harshest environment. Nor have the wolves conquered the ancient spirit to survive & protect future generations. When faced with danger, adults circle the young in the middle of the herd. Facing outward & armed with sharp horns, the fortress menacingly dares predators to approach. This protective attitude nearly led to their extinction, not from wolves, but as easy prey hunted by man. They are, however, survivors. Musk Ox survive today in protected areas in which their shed & most valuable wool is carefully collected & woven into hats, scarves, & mittens by Native Americans to sell. They exist in the wild as they have for centuries, masters of survival in a beautiful yet unforgiving environment & should be regarded respectfully as regal Arctic Heirs.
